Mitre Flats Track and Hut

Last weekend I went on my first overnight hike in quite a while.

The original plan for this trip, to which I was kindly invited by my friend, was to walk to the Mitre Flats Hut (4 hours), unpack, then continue up to the top of the highest mountain in the Tararuas, Mitre (another 5 hours return). However, a late start and low cloud dissuaded us from the second leg of this trip.

The going was quite difficult overall, with the track being quite narrow and precarious in some places. There were a good number of fallen trees, and the terrain was quite rough. Definitely a challenge for out-of shape me.

However, Mitre Flats Hut was very cosy, with a merry fireplace and great company.
