On Monday last week (Wellington Anniversary holiday), I set off with some friends to walk the Paekakariki Escarpment track, a 10km walk along some cliffs on the Kapiti coast.
We caught the Kapiti train line (my first time on a train in Wellington – it was quite enjoyable) and got off at Pukerau bay, the starting point of the track.
The walk was very enjoyable. It was a very windy day, especially in places where the track led along the top of cliffs. However the wind was warm and gave us a helping hand up the steeper sections of the walk.
We dispensed with the track in around 3 hours, including a lunch stop and some sightseeing at a lookout point, and arrived at the next station along the Kapiti line, Paekakariki. From there, it was an easy ride back to Wellington station.
I highly recommend this track. It is not too hard overall, although some sections include quite a few steps. However, you should make sure that the conditions are right and you have plenty of water, before taking it on.
