Mount Grey Hike

The Mount Grey track is a two to three hour walk up the slope of one of the area’s most exposed foothills. I set off with a group of friends towards the mountain, approximately 45 minutes north of Christchurch. After driving up the new northern motorway, up State Highway One and through pine logging land, we arrived at the car park and quickly put on our gear. The walk up was very pleasant, at first challenging but quickly climbing through pine forest, native beech and scrubland. The first lookout was spectacular, with low cloud hovering over the city. We soon reached the summit, taking another rest as we took in the panoramic view of the southern alps, the foothills, Christchurch, the Canterbury plains to the south and peeking through the haze to the north, the snow-clad Kaikoura Ranges.

The walk down was much faster, as we first followed a dirt road, before jogging down through the rest of the track. This had been a perfect tramping day, with light breezes, sunshine and unobscured views over some of the most scenic lands around the city.
